Tol Eressëa "The Lonely Isle"

Li Chih has moved to T'ung-chou, less than twenty miles from the capital. If
he should enter the capital, he would mislead and poison the urban population
as he did in Ma-ch'eng.
(李贄)移至通州。通州距都下僅四十里，倘一入都門，招致蠱惑，又為麻城之續。

Li portrayed himself as a nongiver pointing his finger at other nongivers,
and as "a peddler in mind and pratice" who cloaked himself in the robe of Bu-
ddha in order "to deceive the world and earn for himself a false reputation"
of being a man of benevolence.
他還懷疑自己用佛門的袈裟遮掩了「商賈之行之心」，「以欺世盜名」。這種奇怪現象的
癥結，在於內心矛盾的劇烈交戰而無法自解。
